Rickey Henderson

Rickey Henderson! What can I say about him? I don't remember him as a Yankee. I wasn't even born when he came over to the Bronx, and when he left, I was 4 almost 5. But his legacy on the Yankees lives. He won the Silver Slugger award while with the team and is in a class with just one other in the 80/20 club. I wish I could remember him as a Yankee.

But I do have a memory of him as a player. He was with the Newark Bears in 2003 and 2004. I remember getting up one day and seeing that the Yankees were off, so I decided to go see an Atlantic League game in Newark who just happened to be playing Sparky Lyle's Somerset Patriots (I only live 10 or so miles away from Commerce Bank Ballpark). That game was something, Sparky kept coming out to the mound, but Henderson got on base every single time he was up. I remember him stealing second like it was nothing. Even as an older ballplayer he still had the speed that he was known for, and part of it got him a lifetime trip into Cooperstown.

I wish I could remember more of him, but thats really all I have. But Henderson's legacy will live on for all eternity enshired in the Hall of Fame alongside many many greats such as Ruth, Mantle, Gerig, DiMaggio and so many others.
